The music pulled her along, awfully familiar, and completely strange. Lilian twirled in front of her, one moment glittering with jewels, the next glittering with sparkles of light. She found herself spinning around the room, huge and empty for a moment then tiny and far too cramped for their purposes. Everything was changing, undulating between two realities, two memories – but while everything changed, Lilian remained.

The changing scenery in the room is giving Lia a headache so she focuses on Lilian, lets the changing landscape fade into background noise. Lilian is dancing with her, and it feels right, feels normal, feels… like nothing and everything all at once. No. Not all at once, undulating like the surroundings, changing but oh so familiar.

Lilian is changing too; Lia only realizes it after focusing her attention on the elf’s eyes. They remain the same colour but the essence, the presence behind them is changing, undulating with everything else. One awfully familiar, and the other horribly unknown.

This is a memory surfacing, the first that Lia has encountered, and the stories do not do the echoes of the past justice. The stories cannot describe this awfully empty feeling that lies in Lia’s chest when the echoes fade and time returns to the present, when Lilian curtsey’s sweetly over her hand, when her lips graze over her knuckles.

Lia has one memory, one echo of the past and it is not enough. She wants more. Who is Lilian to her? Why does it feel like Lilian is everything? Why does it feel like she is nothing at all? Why does the way the light falls on Lilian’s figure as she waltz’s away mock her? She must know, she will know. Echoes are just memories, and she will collect them all. She will find out.
